Assassin's Creed: Valhalla – Forgotten Myths #2 - Review & Summary
Written by Sorrosyss, April 28th, 2022
Note: Non Spoiler Review, but a full Spoiler Summary follows Forgotten Myths is a new comic book release from Dark Horse comics, that acts as a story primer for the DLC release, Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok.
Coming in at just 20 pages, this issue is comparatively shorter than most Assassin's Creed comics. There is no Modern Day narrative here, but as you can appreciate it does solely focus upon the Isu era with several of the precursor characters from the game present here such as Loki and Freyja. The artwork is pretty well done, with this having been completed by Martín Túnica, who you might recall previously worked on the last Dark Horse Assassin's Creed Valhalla comic; Song of Glory. Characters match up to their in-game counterparts, and it is quite easy to tell them apart due to the strong art direction, with special mention to the coloring work of Michael Atiyeh, as some of the images here just pop off of the page. As always, your ultimate enjoyment of this comic boils down to what aspect of the Valhalla storyline you enjoyed. If you are someone who likes the mythology side, then you will find exactly what you are looking for here. The second issue of Forgotten Myths is available online now, with a third issue releasing over Spring 2022. A printed and collected graphic novel version is expected in September 2022. Story Summary (WARNING: FULL SPOILERS FOLLOW)
The nine realms, Isu Era
At the gates to Muspelheim, Baldr tries to gain entry past the guards, proclaiming that he has a grand gift to present. This had been his fifth attempt at getting inside, and he was again attacked by the Muspels forcing him to flee. Returning to his boat, he meets with Loki and tends his wounds. After discussing what options they have, Baldr decides that he must lean on his Aesir background, and have a grand crown crafted for his future wife. Loki elects to help, and the two of them head to Svartalfheim.
Upon greeting the dwarves there, Loki helps instruct the grand blacksmiths into creating a most magnificent crown, upon promises of future riches and that it will put an end to their gathering war with the Muspels. The crown requires special gems though, which can only be obtained in Jotunheim.
Loki and Baldr travel to Jotunheim, where the frozen realm seems even colder than normal. Baldr struggles in the cold for six days, whereas Loki, being of Jotun blood, does not feel the icy cold. Once they obtain some gems from the caves, the two huddle inside to keep warm. Baldr tells that despite his invulnerability he fears for his mortality, explaining to Loki that he is plagued by dreams of his death, and that a single mistle-berry would contains enough poison to kill him from the inside, where blades externally could not. He eventually succumbs to the cold, and passes out.
Baldr awakens in his room, finding Freya watching over him. Seemingly returned by Loki in disguise, he explains to Freya what he has been trying to achieve, and being impressed she gives him some of her own gems to Baldr to be placed atop the crown he looks to craft. Baldr thus returns to Svartalfheim once more, where the crown is eventually completed by the Dwarven blacksmiths. Fearing he cannot get entry to Muspelheim, he requests Loki take it on his behalf. Loki agrees, transforming into an eagle and carries the crown with him into the air. As Baldr dons battle armour and prepares to aid the dwarves in the defence of their lands, Loki arrives at Muspelheim. He lands above a pool of lava, throwing the crown down into it, as his laughter rings out.
